Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) of Kolkata has delivered INS Amini, the fifth of eight anti-submarine warfare shallow water craft (ASW SWC) it is building for the Indian Navy. The vessel was handed over at Kattupalli in Tamil Nadu on 5 November 2026, the Indian Navy said on X.
The ship is named after Amini Island in Lakshadweep. It was launched on 16 November 2023. Cochin Shipyard is building another eight craft under the same programme, bringing the total to 16.
Built for coastal waters
- Length: about 77.6 m; draught: about 2.7 m
- Propulsion: marine diesel engines driving waterjets for manoeuvrability in coastal waters
- Weapons and sensors: light torpedoes, Indian-made anti-submarine rocket launchers, modern sonars, a 30 mm naval gun and a combat management system
- Indigenous content: more than 80%; built to Indian Register of Shipping rules
According to India’s Ministry of Defence, the craft are designed for anti-submarine warfare, coastal surveillance and mine-laying in shallow waters near ports and harbours, where larger warships struggle to operate but submarines can still pose a threat.
GRSE said earlier this year that it expects to complete its share of the programme during FY2026–27.
The delivery adds to a busy period of naval shipbuilding worldwide. Read more: Florida’s Eastern Shipbuilding to build six modules for the future USS Philadelphia.
