Chittagong Port’s container handling capacity is expected to reach 6 million TEUs in 2030 once the Matarbari Deep Sea Port and the Bay Terminal are complete, The Financial Express reported on 5 April 2026, citing Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) officials.
CPA Director Omar Faruk told the newspaper that the port’s current capacity is 3.2 million TEUs and that Matarbari will add 2.8 million TEUs. CPA officials said construction of the Matarbari port, on Maheshkhali Island in Cox’s Bazar, would begin in 2026. The report describes the port as the first part of a wider Maheshkhali-Matarbari integrated development zone.
The civil works contract for Phase 1, Package 1 was awarded to a Japanese joint venture of Penta-Ocean Construction (65 per cent) and TOA Corporation (35 per cent). CPA Chairman Rear Admiral S M Moniruzzaman and Penta-Ocean general manager Tomokazu Hasegawa signed the contract, which has a 42-month completion period.
The capacity figures are projections by the port authority and depend on both projects being completed on schedule.
