Payra port should become fully operational in early 2027 once unfinished works are completed, Shipping Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam told parliament on 22 April 2026, UNB reported.
Answering a question from ABM Mosharrof Hossain (Patuakhali-4), the minister said two long-term projects, land acquisition with rehabilitation of affected people and construction of the first terminal with connecting roads and bridges, were due for completion in July and December 2026 respectively. The 1,180-metre bridge over the Andharmanik river and the 6.35-km terminal connection road to the Dhaka-Kuakata road were nearly finished.
He said the Rabnabad channel, the port’s entry route, is currently too shallow for commercial ships because of silting and that dredging must continue year-round. The government is considering a two-year dredging project and the purchase of two trailing suction hopper dredgers. Chattogram port handles about 96 per cent of the country’s sea trade, he said.
