The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) has introduced four new dredgers to tackle navigation problems on the country’s waterways, then Shipping Adviser Brig Gen (retd) Dr M Sakhawat Hossain said on 8 November 2025 while inaugurating the dredger Andharmanik-1 on the Jamuna at Aricha, Manikganj, The Financial Express reported.
He said the four dredgers cost about Tk 450 crore, compared with an estimated Tk 700 to 800 crore if imported. A dump barge will be attached to each dredger to store dredged sand temporarily under the next operational plan. A proposal for high-speed boats for the River Police has been submitted to the home affairs adviser.
The adviser said the Nagarbari river port, built on 36 acres with a 360-metre jetty, is complete, and that daily cargo unloading there had risen from 2,000 tonnes to 20,000 tonnes. BIWTA Chairman Commodore Arif Ahmed Mostafa presided over the event.
