Bangladesh has invited bids for a third liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal amid recurring electricity shortages, Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir announced, bdnews24.com reported on 25 April 2026.
Speaking while visiting a river dredging project in Sylhet, the minister blamed technical problems for disrupted gas imports, which he said had increased load-shedding. Bangladesh currently operates two floating storage and regasification units off Moheshkhali in the Bay of Bengal. A 2023 approval for a third floating terminal in Cox’s Bazar, granted to Summit Oil and Shipping, was cancelled by the interim government in October 2024.
The minister also said diesel prices had risen 15 per cent and that the government plans new fuel storage facilities on a priority basis to improve energy security, referring to the Middle East crisis. The report did not give the tender’s deadline or the terminal’s planned capacity or location.
