The Bangladesh Navy has inducted BNFC Boliyan, a 70-tonne floating crane built by the Navy-operated Dockyard and Engineering Works Limited (DEW) in Narayanganj, BSS reported on 4 June 2026, citing an ISPR press release.

The vessel

The crane is 45 metres long, 15 metres wide and 3 metres deep, with a maximum speed of 10.5 mph. Its keel was laid on 30 June 2024, so construction took just under two years. Chief of Naval Staff Admiral M Nazmul Hassan was chief guest at the handover.

What it will do

According to the release, Boliyan will support repair and maintenance of naval ships both alongside jetties and at sea, and lift and transfer heavy machinery and naval equipment. ISPR said it was built with “indigenous technology” and described the induction as a step towards stronger naval operations and logistics and a sign of growth in the country’s shipbuilding and defence industries.

Context

DEW is also building five riverine patrol vessels for the Coast Guard, whose keels were laid in June 2026. Floating cranes of this size are specialist ship-repair assets, and building them locally reduces dependence on hired or imported equipment for fleet maintenance.
