Background report. This summary recaps a Daily Star report originally published on 22 April 2025. It is provided for context on the Matarbari project and is not new news.
The Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) signed a contract with a Japanese joint venture of Penta-Ocean Construction Co Ltd and TOA Corporation to build the first terminal of the Matarbari deep-sea port in Cox’s Bazar. CPA Chairman Rear Admiral SM Moniruzzaman and Penta-Ocean general manager Tomokazu Hasegawa signed the deal at a Dhaka hotel.
Phase 1 includes a 460-metre container jetty and a 300-metre multipurpose jetty, estimated at Tk 6,196.67 crore, of which the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is lending Tk 5,426.67 crore and CPA is providing Tk 770 crore. The whole port was then estimated at Tk 24,381.40 crore. The report said container ships up to 350 metres long carrying 8,200 TEUs could berth, compared with feeders of about 200 metres and 2,500 TEUs at Chattogram.
Then Shipping Adviser Brig Gen (retd) Sakhawat Hussain said the country would “turn into an important energy and transhipment hub” once the port is running.
