The proposed 1,000 mmcfd land-based LNG terminal near the Matarbari Deep Sea Port in Cox’s Bazar will be built through a public-private partnership (PPP), UNB reported. The Advisers Council Committee on Economic Affairs approved the change in principle at a meeting chaired virtually by Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed.
State-owned RPGCL, a Petrobangla subsidiary, had initially pursued the project through an unsolicited process under the Speedy Increase of Power and Energy Supply (Special Provision) Act, which the interim government later repealed. The report noted that the law had allowed contracts without competitive tender and had drawn criticism over transparency.
Bangladesh imports LNG through two floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) at Moheshkhali, operated by Excelerate Energy and Summit Group. Officials told UNB the land-based terminal would be the first of its kind in the country once implemented.
