Captain Sheikh Monir Ahmed, a Bangladeshi master mariner, returned home on 19 June 2026 after a Thai court granted him temporary release, The Business Standard reported.
The case stems from the sinking of the Panama-flagged feeder ship SEALLOYD ARC off Phuket on 7 February 2026, two days after it left Port Klang, Malaysia, for Chattogram. Thai Coast Guard rescued all 16 Bangladeshi crew. Fifteen crew members returned in April, while the master stayed in Thailand for legal proceedings.
According to the Bangladesh Merchant Marine Officers’ Association, he was charged over environmental pollution from the sinking. An appeal is pending, and he has asked the government for diplomatic support.
