Sixteen crew members of the Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC) vessel Banglar Joyjatra, including Captain Shafiqul Islam, were set to return home on 21 July 2026 after the ship spent 115 days stranded in the Strait of Hormuz, bdnews24.com reported.
The crew signed off at Durban, South Africa, and were to fly via Dubai to Dhaka’s Shahjalal International Airport. Chief Engineer Rashedul Hasan, who also signed off, said he planned to travel to the US first.
The ship crossed the strait around 3am Bangladesh time on 23 June, anchored at Fujairah the same day, left on 26 June and reached Durban on 16 July, according to MarineTraffic data cited in the report. It was carrying 37,500 tonnes of fertiliser from Saudi Arabia’s Ras Al Khair port. All 31 crew aboard are Bangladeshi; the vessel is chartered by a Singapore-based firm.
