Trade through Benapole land port slowed sharply in the first eight months of fiscal 2025-26, UNB reported on 9 March 2026, with daily truck traffic roughly halving.
Port data cited by the agency showed 1,235,521.84 tonnes of goods traded through 68,086 trucks in the period: imports of 1,110,903.81 tonnes and exports of 124,618.61 tonnes. In the whole of FY2024-25, 2,432,980.69 tonnes moved through 143,336 trucks. Daily import trucks fell from 500-550 to 250-300, and export trucks from about 300 to 150.
Officials attributed the slowdown to weaker Bangladesh-India trade amid strained relations since August 2024 and the Middle East conflict; business leaders also blamed irregularities at the port. Benapole Custom House recorded a revenue shortfall of about Tk 1,650 crore against its target over the eight months. Revenue officer Monibur Rahman said the custom house was working to simplify assessment and speed up release of goods.
