The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) introduced special passenger launch services from 17 March 2026 until the day before Eid-ul-Fitr to ease crowding at Dhaka’s Sadarghat river port, BSS reported on 14 March.
Six launches departed from Basila launch ghat and three from Shimulia tourist ghat, both in Dhaka. The Shimulia route ran via Demra, Narayanganj, Chandpur, Kaliganj and Hijla to Barishal, with services to Chandpur and Barishal; Basila departures ran from 7am to 5:30pm.
Free porter services for the bags of elderly and female passengers were offered at Sadarghat from 17 to 28 March, and wheelchair services were available at Sadarghat and Barishal river port for sick and disabled passengers. BIWTA said the aim was to “ensure safe, smooth, and comfortable travel for homebound passengers”.
