Bangladesh Railway plans to assess rail connectivity at Chattogram Port’s existing and future terminals in an effort to reduce the port’s reliance on road haulage, Maritime Gateway reported on 23 October 2026, citing the railway’s published consultancy scope.
The work falls under the World Bank-funded Green Railway Transport Project Preparation Facility, with Tk93 crore earmarked for studies and designs. The studies are expected to be completed by the end of 2027 — a deadline for the studies, not for new rail links.
Terminals under review
The review covers the General Cargo Berth, Chittagong Container Terminal, the conventional jetties, Patenga Container Terminal and New Mooring Container Terminal, with Laldia Container Terminal and the Bay Terminal included for future connectivity. According to the report, older terminal tracks are metre gauge and must be reconciled with planned broad-gauge freight services.
The scope also includes upgrades between Faujdarhat and the Chattogram Goods Port Yard, the proposed Bay Terminal connection, freight locomotive needs, and a separate assessment of a rail link between the Mirsharai Economic Zone logistics hub and the Dhaka–Chattogram corridor.
