Japan has decided to provide a patrol vessel to Bangladesh to enhance its maritime security capability, Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said after a summit between Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in Tokyo on 27 October 2026.

The ministry described the vessel as Security-Contributing ODA, and said both sides reaffirmed security and defence cooperation. It did not give the vessel’s type, cost or which Bangladeshi agency would operate it.

The leaders also agreed to upgrade the Bay of Bengal Industrial Growth Belt (BIG-B) into “BIG-B for Shared Prosperity”, with disaster and geopolitical risk preparedness and cooperation for peace and stability among its four pillars, alongside connectivity and public-private cooperation.
