The parliamentary committee on government undertakings has asked the Chittagong, Mongla and Payra port authorities to resolve long-standing audit objections and improve transparency and accountability.

The committee, chaired by Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni, reviewed the financial management, operations and audit reports of the three port authorities at a meeting at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, UNB reported on 12 October.

Chattogram: security and unclaimed cargo

The committee discussed security at Chattogram port following a newspaper report of containers loaded with goods going missing. It called for faster disposal of auctionable containers and vehicles that have been held at the port for a long time, better coordination between Customs and port management, and stronger digital systems.

Mongla and Payra: projects under review

For Mongla and Payra, the committee reviewed dredging and project implementation. It said projects must meet their intended goals and public money must be used properly. Where irregularities or financial losses are established, those responsible should be identified and action taken under the rules.

The committee also discussed recovering matured fixed deposits that the Chittagong Port Authority holds with various banks.
