Bangladesh could use offshore wind to diversify its energy mix, according to a review published on 26 January 2026 in the journal Oxford Open Energy by S Abir and M Hossain of Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology.
Candidate sites
The paper identifies Cox’s Bazar, Sandwip and the wider Bay of Bengal as candidate areas for offshore wind, in a country with rising energy demand and heavy reliance on imported fossil fuels.
The obstacles
The authors list the lack of a dedicated offshore wind policy, the need for cyclone resilience and the effect of high humidity on turbines as the main challenges. Drawing on experience in China and the UK, they propose a phased roadmap.
Recommendations
The review recommends creating a national offshore wind authority, using cyclone-resistant turbine designs and offering financial incentives to investors, and argues that tackling technical, economic and regulatory barriers could help Bangladesh meet its renewable energy targets by 2041. The publicly available abstract does not give capacity or cost estimates; Bangladesh has no operating offshore wind farm.
