Summit’s floating LNG terminal off Moheshkhali in Cox’s Bazar is back in operation after scheduled maintenance, and gas supply to the national grid is returning to normal, state energy corporation Petrobangla said on Saturday (7 November).

Key points

  • Maintenance work on the Summit LNG terminal at Moheshkhali has been completed.
  • Regasification, turning imported liquefied natural gas back into gas for the grid, restarted at 1pm on Saturday, according to Petrobangla’s statement.
  • Petrobangla had announced on 1 November that regasification at the terminal would stop from 8am on 4 November to 4pm on 7 November, so the restart came about three hours earlier than planned.
  • During the shutdown, Petrobangla had said daily supply to the national gas grid would fall from 920 million cubic feet to 600 million cubic feet.

Why it matters

Bangladesh relies on its offshore floating LNG terminals off Moheshkhali to top up falling domestic gas output. Any pause at one of them quickly shows up as lower supply to power plants, industry and homes. The country is also working to add import capacity: it has invited bids for a third LNG import terminal, and plans for a land-based LNG terminal near Matarbari have moved to a public-private partnership.
