Turkish marine survey company DenAr Ocean Engineering Services has been chosen by Turkey’s Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources to survey the seabed for the country’s first offshore wind development programme.

What the survey covers

  • The project, called NCS-01, covers two areas in the Sea of Marmara that the government is preparing as possible offshore wind sites.
  • The work includes multibeam bathymetry, side-scan sonar, sub-bottom profiling, magnetometer and ultra-high-resolution seismic surveys, and checks for unexploded ordnance.
  • DenAr will also carry out offshore cone penetration tests and seabed sampling from its DP2 survey vessel DenAr Explorer, backed by laboratory testing and geotechnical reports.
  • The vessels being mobilised include DenAr, DenAr Explorer, DenAr Surveyor and Salvor.

Part of a wider programme

The contract sits within Turkey’s EU-supported Offshore Wind Energy Support Project, carried out with World Bank involvement. Alongside the seabed work, the programme covers wind-resource measurement, feasibility and grid-connection studies, and environmental surveys for possible offshore wind areas around Bandırma, Şarköy and Karabiga.

The aim is to cut development risk and build the technical groundwork for future offshore wind tenders.

Why it matters for Bangladesh

Government-led site surveys before tenders are a common first step for new offshore wind markets. Bangladesh is at an early stage too: a recent study set out a roadmap for offshore wind in the Bay of Bengal (see also our in-depth look at the Bay of Bengal blue economy).
